I have a Macbook Pro. Everyone insists that spyware and virusware aren’t necessary. I have had nothing but problems since I bought the computer, (2 years ago). I have a hard drive with tons of duplicated pics that has been impossible to organize. I recently hooked it up to a friends PC who had outdated virusware. The virusware said the hard drive contained a trojan horse, or some virus. Anyway, it was unable to remove it. What’s the best virusware/spware for compatible with Macs? Something free would be great, but at this rate… I really need to get this stuff prioritized. Please Help.

Spyware? is derived from what the software used to just do: sit on a victim’s PC and proceed in processing all personal information the user would type?. This information would then be passed through the Internet to either the author of the spyware or a? Hacking group? I’m doubtful that a computer virus-detection program could tell you anything useful about the state of your MacBook’s hard drive. The pointers you’ve gotten from the 1st two posters will, at best, do you no good because they’re intended for PCs – not Macs. Intego and Symantec make good virus-protection programs for Macs – so there’s a free open-source program called ClamXav. You can find a recent review of virus-protection programs for Macs at http://www. macworld. com/article/135900/2008/10/antivirus. html. . I’d be very wary of downloading free software unless I was directed there from a source like MacWorld. That’s a common way computers get infected in the first place.
